For example, to query the dirty bit on drive C, type: fsutil dirty query C: Sample output: Volume C: is dirty Volume C: is not dirty Is your volume dirty or is it not dirty? You cannot use fsutil or chkntfs from a Command Prompt to clear the dirty bit on a volume sorry again, Microsoft "experts".
You will also not fix this problem by editing your registry pay attention Microsoft Support Engineer and Forum Moderator "experts" - that is not the problem. You could tell XP not to check the dirty bit on a volume where the dirty bit just will not clear, but that is probably not a good idea since there is some kind of problem on the volume that needs attention.
The only way a volume can be not in use is to schedule it to run on the next reboot so when XP is just starting to load or from the XP Recovery Console. If XP will not run chkdsk properly when your system reboots or the dirty bit will not clear as it should, you need to look in the Event Viewer for the chkdsk log and see what is going on and fix it. When chkdsk runs automatically on a reboot, you may wonder where to find the results.
The results are shown in the Event Viewer Application log. You need to look there after check disk has run and XP has finished loading for the results and for any problems. A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box enter: eventvwr. A disk check has been scheduled.
Windows will now check the disk. Windows has finished checking your disk. You should have no errors. Check the dirty bit again. That is a good idea because you can watch chkdsk as it runs and see the results on you screen instead of looking in the Event Viewer logs or just wondering what happened it also just "feels" better when you can see it working.
If your hard drive is failing, you may never be able to clear the dirty bit, in which case you can also tell XP to never check the dirty bit on the afflicted volume this will usually do the trick.
Telling XP not to check the dirty bit on a volume would be risky behavior since there would still be some kind of problem with your hard disk. The cmd mentioned in youre post is wrong.. In reply to A. User's post on September 10, I am using AVG Free.
I have run chkdsk without success. I have followed your instructions without succcess. In reply to dmqq's post on September 11, Of course it is dirty - that's what that message is trying to tell you. The Event Viewer will not help you.
Running commands will not help you. Let chkdsk finish and correct any problems it might find. When the chkdsk runs clean, remove the CD and restart your system.
