Now bestselling writer Alexandra Ripley brings us back to Tara and reintroduces us to the characters we remember so well: Rhett, Ashley, Mammy, Suellen, Aunt Pittypat, and, of course, Scarlett. As the classic story, first told over half a century ago, moves forward, the greatest love affair in all fiction is reignited; amidst heartbreak and joy, the endless, consuming passion between Scarlett O'Hara and Rhett Butler reaches its startling culmination.
Rich with surprises at every turn and new emotional, breathtaking adventures, Scarlett satisfies our longing to reenter the world of Gone With the Wind, and like its predecessor, Scarlett will find an eternal place in our hearts.
With Gone with the Wind, I was listening whenever I could, even ignoring my kids. It was lacking in description of Rhett throughout the book too that really made him so attractive in the original book. I had no passion for this book. Maybe the movie is better. Ahhhh Scarlett. Only you can have such a life and love such a man as Rett Butler. Looked up some of the Irish lore. Sounds to me like author got it pretty close to reality. The entire book kept me entertained.
I seem to remember a movie based on this book. Sure glad the book was better. The narrator with her Irish accent put me in mind of the movie silent man with John Wayne. And the horses called hunters.
So many witty comments! What was Ripley thinking? This book destroyed everything GWTW set up. Nov 26, Frances Sawaya rated it did not like it.
When this came out I was hopeful. After the first few pages I was in despair how could the Mitchell family allow this to happen!!! The sections in Ireland were beyond belief I live here, so I can speak firsthand ; the characters were shallow; the plot extensions ridiculous, the writing on a level of Cecilia Ahern, i.
Disappointed to say the least. Jun 10, Heidi rated it it was amazing. Jun 11, Nichelle rated it it was amazing. I read this when it first came out. I loved it. I really am not a fan of Gone With the Wind. But when this one came out it called to me and I wanted to see if the story I wanted to be happy would end that way and I was pleasantly surprised.
Gone With the Wind is a classic for some. This one was for me. I gave up reading it about pages in. Apr 02, Marlena rated it liked it. A nice try, but it didn't come close to Margaret Mitchell's original novel.
Jul 12, Barbara rated it it was ok. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers. To view it, click here. No need. Rhett and Scarlet ended together in my head already Ok I am done! Feb 20, Mariellen Carroll rated it did not like it. One of the worse books I have ever read. I was intrigued with the idea that someone picked up Scarlett and Rhett's story and wanted to continue it. However, despite finishing all pages, I was disappointed in some of the character development, a prime example being Scarlett's little girl, Cat.
I felt the author was totally unrealistic in regards to the true development of a child. Granted, some children are more advanced than others; however, the things the author had this child doing - well, let's just say, kind of unbelievable. I I was intrigued with the idea that someone picked up Scarlett and Rhett's story and wanted to continue it. I was partial to the storyline of Scarlett returning to Ireland where she sort of "grew into herself" and became a woman as opposed to a spoiled child.
But, when she was immersed in society, one could see threads of the old Scarlet coming through. Where Scarlett was happiest? Well, as a reader, I got the sense that she didn't really know. Of course, the author wanted us to think that the only way Scarlett would be truly happy would be to be back in Rhett's arms.
In many ways, I thought the actual ending was rushed. One minute Scarlett is at a horse race, meets Rhett, who is appalled because he reads about Scarlett's upcoming marriage and totally ignores her, striding off in anger, and then all of a sudden Scarlett races back to her home to meet up with Rhett because she just knows he will be there looking for her!
I would have written the ending differently, and given it a stronger sense, still coming to the conclusion we all wanted to see - that of Scarlett and Rhett being reunited. And, I might not have killed off one of my favourite characters It isn't a book I will keep on my shelf, though. Nov 08, Sharonda Braxton rated it liked it. Well, I "wanted" to give it 4 stars, I really did. Some parts of the story kept me mildly interested, while others simply just babbled on. Maybe it's because in my imagination I had my own ideas of how Rhett and Scarlet's story should go on, but even then the character's developments stayed true to who they were in the original story.
The sequel unfortunately is anything but. In GWTW the conversations between the two were quite comical, enthralling, and toward the end, painful. Every word they spoke, not only to each other but even with other characters - including the unlikable ones - held your attention.
That didn't happen in this book. I found myself saying way too many times for my liking that "NO!! He was intelligent and clever! Yes, he could be a cad, but he had personality!!!!!
