How to install backup camera dodge ram

Locate the reverse light wires for your car. This is a tricky step, and you want to make sure that you do a good job. This is how to connect a backup camera to the reverse light. Strip the positive and negative wires on your reverse lights make sure your car is powered off before you do this. Using a small screwdriver, separate some of the strands of the stripped wire, and splice in the power cable for your backup camera to them. Usually you can do this by looping the wires together.

Make sure positive is connected to positive and negative is connected to negative. This is usually located to the bottom left of the steering wheel. Mount the Monitor Next step is mounting your monitor. It may be one that mounts to your rearview mirror, or one that mounts to your dashboard.

In either event, following the mounting instructions that come with the device is your best bet. If all else fails, this backup camera installation guide can be very helpful. You may also need to run a trigger wire up to your monitor, or even power it through the same source as the backup camera.

Again models will vary. See the guide linked above for good instructions on how to do this. All you need to do now is mount the camera itself to the back of your license plate or trunk, connect the appropriate wires RCA and power and you should be ready to go!

What we need is a 10 Way Male Housing , enough pins L to stuff the conductors of interest and a few plugs to fill the unused positions. I purchased a few connector housings, pins and plugs to allow for some trial and error. Note: there has been quite a bit of consolidation in the connector market, so the documentation shows FCI, with a reference to TTI.

I found the connector pin definitions by following the rather cryptic selections on the Mopar Connector Repair Kits web site using the particulars for my truck — RAM D2 Pickup for the new connector and DD Cab Chassis for the pre-existing 6-pin connector on the purchased cable.

The wire colors on my cable are similar to those in the above figure above, except that the Camera Shield uses a yellow wire soldered to the physical cable shield wires.

That being said, I was and am totally happy with their service. The product descriptions on their web site leave a bit to be desired, but the part numbers did the trick. The chassis cab end of this cable used a separate wire to connect the cable shield to one of the pins. After cutting off the stock connector, I fed the cut end through a hole drilled in the end-cap of my Camera Assembly see below. At this point or before attaching the pins , one could route this cable through a hole no bigger than the cable itself!

I crimped the pins onto the wires using a universal crimping tool I have and followed-up with solder. I assembled the pins in a new housing and attached to the Protective Tailgate Wiring Kit plate:. This table shows the mapping of the original 6-pin Chassis Cable connector to our new 6-pin connector. Installation of this product would be rated a 3 out of 5. Refer to the video below for installation advice on the aftermarket OE style camera kit.
